College Counseling

An effective college search must begin with an honest self-assessment.

The more our students know about themselves and their needs, passions and goals, the better equipped they will be to make important decisions that lie ahead. The College Process is an exciting time for students. For many, it is the first time that they are being asked to take inventory of their own strengths and talents apart from their peers and other adults in their lives. This “process” is a journey and each student will have their own distinct timeline. 

In college counseling, we prioritize individual attention and the connection we create with each student. Together we will develop a broad and well-balanced range of schools that reflect and match each students’ strengths, capabilities, and desires. Ultimately, we hope to see our students make confident and informed decisions when it comes to college matriculation. 

Our Process

In the fall of junior year, the College Counseling Team will meet with students and parents to give them an overview of the timeline of junior and senior year. During the second trimester of junior year, the college counselors begin their individual meetings with students. Over the course of the fall Holton welcomes over 120 college admission representatives from universities across the country and abroad. 

The college counseling team participates  in national conferences and fly-in events on college campuses in addition to attending local admission events hosted by colleges and universities. Professional development is key to providing the Holton-Arms community with counselors who are up-to-date, informed, and maintain relationships with our colleagues on college campuses and at other independent schools.

Holton's experienced college counseling team  works closely and communicates often with faculty, advisors and administrators in order to fully support our students. During the junior and senior year there are a number of workshops and panel discussions held in order to sharpen the students’ understanding of a broad range of colleges, help in application preparation, and give insight to the college admission process.
