Notes from the Middle School Office

Part of making sure your daughter(s) has a smooth transition from summer break to the new school year is having all the necessary back to school information. You can find this information below.

Communication Policy and Cell Phones: We want our Middle School students to develop independence and strive to create an environment in which students can manage their busy school lives with minimal disruption. Therefore, we ask that communications between students and parents be reserved for emergencies only and coordinated through the Middle School Office. Our policy requires students to power off mobile devices that are not being used for school work and place them in their lockers.  Students may not send or receive phone calls, texts, or emails during the school day from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Book Bags, Backpacks & Tote Bags:  To improve the safety in our classrooms and study hall and support the development and practice of executive functioning skills, students will maintain their books, supplies, etc. in their lockers and retrieve items as needed during passing time.  They should place bags in their lockers. Backpacks (e.g. book bags, SCOUT bags, etc.) must be able to fit within the MS locker.

Attendance Expectations: The school day begins at 8:00 a.m. Please have your daughter at school on time—we recommend you drop her off in front of the Main Entrance of the School by 7:50 a.m. each day. This enables her to have time for morning interactions with classmates and teachers, settling in without the anxiety raised by rushing or entering when advisory or assembly is underway.  We expect student attendance at both morning assembly AND advisory.  If you are running late, or if your daughter will be absent, please notify the Middle School Office 301-365-6017 as soon as possible.  For more information on our attendance policy and other important school policies, please refer to the Middle School Student Handbook.

Carpool Information:  Carpool in the Middle School takes place in the main entrance circle beginning at 3:30 p.m.  However, if your daughter is carpooling with another student from the Lower, then she should go to Lower School for carpool.

Please note Middle School dismissal is at 3:30 p.m.,  but it will take your daughter some time to gather her belongings and move to carpool.  Please take this into account as you arrive to pick up your daughter.
Summer Reading and Math Packet: Please encourage your daughter to take these summer assignments on at a gentle pace (posted on the Middle School tab). Our aim is to help them make a smooth re-entry in September, not to overtake their summer!

Professional Days and Wednesday 9:00 a.m. Late Openings: We will use this time for faculty professional work and collaboration time. Bus transportation will remain on a normal schedule; therefore, girls who take the bus will be supervised in the Middle School.
