When Lily Muhlbaum ’22 was contemplating hiking Vermont’s 272-mile Long Trail this summer, she knew the journey would be an incredible opportunity to meet personal goals and grow. But she wanted her trek to connect to something bigger as well.
“If I’m going out and hiking, it seems unfair for me to take that for granted; instead, I need to find a way to support my community,” she said in a recent WUSA9 news segment.
So Lily decided that as she took to the trails, she would also take to the internet and try to raise awareness of racial injustices and environmental racism. She not only succeeded in completing the arduous, 23-day hike from Massachusetts to Canada; she also raised more than $8,200 for the Sierra Club’s environmental justice efforts, shattering her fundraising goals.
