Cross Country Captures Trifecta of Titles

Cross Country Captures Trifecta of Titles

Congratulations to the cross country team for achieving a tremendous accomplishment: capturing all three championships to close out a strong season. The team won the Independent School League Championship on Oct. 30, the Montgomery County Private School Championship on Nov. 6, and the Maryland State Private School Championship on Nov. 13. This is the first time Holton has achieved this trifecta of titles.

The wins came after a season of consistently improving performances each meet, which allowed the team to peak at the right time.

"Every race (during the season) we were dropping time, dropping time, dropping time," said co-head coach Carrie Braun. "We knew that in order to be able to walk away with the title, we would have to have season-bests across the board for all top seven runners, which is what we did. It was absolutely amazing."

Repeating after winning the 2019 ISL title was not an easy feat after the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-head coach Toni Henderson said the team showed strength in pushing themselves when it mattered.

"This is proof that when you buy into the program, you can get great results," Henderson said. "Even without the championships, we were still winners. We brought home more ribbons and medal this year more than we did ever before, for both varsity and JV. We are one team that only separated at the meets."

If you've ever watched these student-athletes run, you can easily spot them by the distinctive bright pink ribbons in their hair. Those ribbons are one of the many traditions the team uses to build camaraderie and friendship which strengthens the work they do together on the courses. Wednesdays, aka "Hump Days," are for running hills, and once a week the team runs off campus for a change of scenery.

"Repeating any championship is hard, but to do three back-to-back championships and to keep that momentum going all in one season, it's incredibly hard," said Braun. "To be able to do that and dig deep is amazing."

Four Panthers will be representing Holton at the Eastbay Cross Country Northeast Regional in the Bronx on Nov. 27: Elise Attiogbe '25, Gabi Berman '25Naoko Kinoshita-Ruiz '25, and Marley Kurey '23. Go Panthers!
