Lower School Students Share Community Service Passions
The Helen Poon Community Engagement Fair is an annual opportunity for students to see how they can make a difference in the world.
The fair was established by late long-time Lower School team member Helen Poon to allow students become informed and inform others about an organization that others are passionate about.
Lower School students volunteered to set up booths and speak about their community service passions.
Students worked in groups and were given time during resource and recess to research their organizations, which ranged from the World Wildlife Fund to National Public Radio to Samaritan's Purse.
They filled trifold poster boards with facts about the organizations, why they matter, and how you could help join the cause. They also distributed bookmarks with more information about their cause.
As visitors and their fellow classmates browsed the displays, students answered questions about the organizations and shared what they had learned.
Lila A.'30 and her friends chose the organization Save the Turtles. She spent about two weeks helping work on their poster, which was loaded with information about ways people can help the endangered sea turtles.
"I think it helped improve my research skills, which made it a lot of fun when we got to the end. Then we could share with a bunch of people all of our hard work."
