Congratulations to Nicole Powell ’22 (far left above), who was recently selected to represent Team USA at the World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships and World Age Group Competitions taking place this June and July in Geneva, Switzerland. The team was named following the conclusion of the U.S. Acrobatic World Team Trials in late April.
Nicole and partners Sara Rodriguez and Elise Srsic (all pictured above) were selected as one of the two age 11-17 women’s groups. The gymnasts perform highly physical yet graceful gymnastic routines together, like something between an individual gymnast’s floor routine and a complex group cheerleading routine with high-flying stunts. (Nicole’s brother, Shawn, also made the 12-19 Mixed Pair Alternates for Geneva. They used to compete together.)
Although she has competed at Nationals three times, this marks Nicole’s first time making Worlds. When she heard the news, she says, “I stopped breathing for a second and just put my hand on my heart.”
She continues, “I’ve been training for seven years for this and all of it comes down to two routines that are two minutes each. If it’s not your best…”
Nicole is thrilled that she and her teammates did do their best in April and all season, and she has her eyes on the podium this summer. She’s pushed through schedule challenges, training six days a week while juggling the academic and other demands of high school, and overcome setbacks and injuries. Just last summer, she shattered her ankle and tore two ligaments.
Love of sport and challenge keeps bringing her back.
“I just love this sport,” she says. “Through it, I’ve been able to make so many friends and travel so much. I don’t know what I’d be like without it.”
Best of luck in Geneva, Nicole and team! Go, Team USA! For more details and to stream the competition (competition for Nicole's 11-17 age group is June 23 & 24), visit worldacro2021.com.
