Congratulations and best of luck to Sophie Duncan ’22, who qualified to swim in the 200 IM and 400 IM events in the Olympic trials this Sunday, June 13 in Omaha, Neb.!
For the athlete, it is a lifelong dream come true and the culmination of so many years of hard work. “I’ve been swimming since I was 4, started swimming competitively at age 7, and have been doing it ever since,” she says.
Sophie is quick to note that despite challenges brought by the pandemic, it actually helped make her dream a reality. She didn’t have a qualifying time a year ago, when the Olympics were originally slated to take place. But with some extra time and work, she was able to make the cut this fall. “I was super excited,” she says. “I really wouldn’t have gotten this opportunity if it wasn’t for Covid.”
As far as her goals for the meet, Sophie says she’s just thrilled to be taking part. “I’m just looking forward to the honor of representing my club, Nation’s Capital, and Holton for this event. I’m not trying to put any pressure on it, but I obviously do want to try to swim fast.”
Holton Coach Graham Westerberg is among those cheering loudly for Sophie. “I am so proud and happy for her that she will be representing Holton at the 2021 Olympic trials. From your entire Holton Swim and Dive family, we wish you the best of luck! Have fun!”
Good luck, Sophie!
The trials will be broadcast on the Olympic Channel and NBCSN; Sophie is competing in the higher-level Wave 2 trials on Sunday, June 13. Find lots more updates and information at usaswimming.org’s Olympic trials page.
