Holton's Winter athletes were celebrated at the Upper School Winter Sports Banquet on Tuesday, March 3. Parents, students, and faculty arrived to a Dining Room festively decorated by the parents with tables for each team. In opening remarks Head of School Susanna Jones spoke about what had made this season's teams so special. She referred to the write-up in the Washington Post (February 21, 2009, Page E07) about Varsity Ice Hockey's SIX-peat, come-from-behind victory in the MSHL Championship game: "All season, the Panthers had emphasized the need for teamwork in the absence of a scoring superstar... and in this spirit, two Panthers were required for each of the goals that propelled them to the title." Commented Ms. Jones, "This spirit of teamwork was the hallmark of this season's teams; in fact, it is a hallmark of Holton teams." She went on to mention the team spirit for Indoor Track, Varsity Basketball, and finally Varsity Swimming. "Being a part of a team teaches our students that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." Ms. Jones was followed by Holton's Athletic Director Julie Treadwell who welcomed the parents and recognized the "support team" for the athletes - their coaches, the parents, and the athletic/training staff - before turning the podium over to this year's HAA President, Sophia Corrigan, '09.

The evening's festivities then moved to the induction of new members to the Holton Athletic Association (HAA) by the current members. This season's new inductees included Beth Hansen, '10; Sarah Hansen, '10; Sarah Meyerhoff, '10; Carly Rushford, '09; Mariah Sanguinetti, '10; and Olivia Taylor, '09.

Each of the coaches for the season's five teams gave a quick season wrap-up and recognized the individual team members.

Seven athletes received All-ISL recognition this season: for basketball, Sequoia Austin, '10; and for swimming, Carmen Ferraro, '10, Jenny Gathright, '12, Jing Jing Li, '09, Lisa Lin, '10, Alex Poon, '10, and Jackie Tully, '09. Three athletes received All-WIHLMA (ice hockey) recognition: Sammy Shane, '09, and Emily Wilde, '09, were named to the league's second team, while Stephanie Dell, '09, received honorable mention.
