College Preparatory School for Girls Grades 3-12

Instrumental Music

The hallmark of the Lower School Instrumental Music Program is that every girl play a band or orchestral instrument. Each girl begins her instrumental music journey in third grade when she selects the recorder or a string instrument and becomes part of a band or string ensemble. The Lower School ensemble experience is supported by group lessons during and after the school day. Optional private lessons are available through the Arts Adjunct Program.

The instrumental experience helps students develop technical skills for expressive performance, encourages collaboration, and fosters a greater sense of community. The instrumental experience focuses on the following values:
  • Individual responsibility
  • Commitment to the collaborative work of the ensemble
  • Respect for individuals and the ensemble
  • Aesthetic sensitivity
