Third Graders Stir Up Kindness With Soup-Making Project

Holton’s third graders rolled up their sleeves for the beloved tradition of cooking a giant pot of vegetable soup for Bethesda Cares, a local organization that supports individuals experiencing food insecurity in our community. Each student arrived with “third-grade handfuls” of uncut, washed vegetables—carrots, potatoes, yams, onions, celery, and more—ready to be transformed into a homemade meal made with care.

With parent volunteers helping, the classroom quickly filled with the buzz of excitement and the rhythmic sound of chopping. When asked what their favorite part was, several students didn’t hesitate: “Chopping!” Feelings about eating soup, however, were decidedly more varied. “I like soup but not the vegetables,” one student admitted with a grin. Another shrugged, “I don’t really like soup, but making it is fun.”

At the heart of the project: the joy of doing something together that helps someone else. The finished soup will be delivered the following day, carrying with it not just nourishment, but a whole lot of third-grade heart.
