Team Panthers Against Cancer Raise Money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2024 Mid-Atlantic Student Visionaries of the Year campaign has concluded for the year. The Student Visionaries of the Year campaign is a seven-week fundraising challenge where exceptional students raise funds and awareness to support LLS’s mission to cure leukemia and lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, myeloma, and improve the quality of lives of patients and their families. This year, there were three local campaigns, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC, with 70 teams participating.

Team Panthers Against Cancer, the Holton-Arms team, participated in the DC campaign. Members of the Team Panthers Against Cancer, led by Sarah D. ‘25, are: Alina A. ‘24, Caitlin F. ‘26, Ella H. ‘26, Ella S. ‘27, Jaida M. ‘27, Madison J. ‘25, Palmer H. 25, Sonia H. ‘25, and Stella L. ‘27. During the seven-week campaign, the Team raised funds primarily through personal asks. They sent personalized emails and hand-written letters to everyone they knew to gain support. They raised larger funds through corporate sponsorships. Sarah D. ‘25 met with over 15 companies to pitch her campaign, and ultimately, almost everyone she met with donated personally or through their companies. To raise awareness and funds at Holton, the Team held a Bake Sale at Holton that was very successful.

"I got involved with Team Panthers Against Cancer last year as a team member because my Dad was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2013,” said Sarah D., the team leader. She continued, “LLS has been an important organization to me and my family, so I was highly motivated to get involved. I was excited to be part of the team again this year as the team leader. My other team members had personal experiences with cancer or believed in the mission of LLS, so they wanted to get involved to help save lives and make a direct impact on cancer patients and research.”

The final sums raised by all the teams in the area were added up at the Grand Finale Celebration. Team Panthers Against Cancer raised more than $122,270! Their extraordinary contribution earned them the Hero Award, allowing them to connect their names to an LLS research portfolio and they won the Mission Pillar Award for Research. This incredible success will allow for new treatments and further research for blood cancers.

Julie Waskiewicz, LLS Student Visionaries of the Year Campaign Development Director, said, “This group is full of bright, intelligent, creative, compassionate, and dedicated students who understand the importance of helping others and ‘giving back.’ I have no doubt that these qualities are reinforced every day by Holton-Arms School’s phenomenal teachers and administrative staff. I am confident that these students have a bright future.”

This was the tenth year that Team Panthers Against Cancer had a team to support cancer research. During this time, Holton students have raised a cumulative total of over $1 million!  Next year the team will be led by Palmer H., Ella H., and Stella L. They look forward to continuing the Holton legacy of supporting this important organization.
