Shaping Futures Through Math: Alessandra King Recognized by Northwestern

Holton-Arms Upper School Math teacher Alessandra King has been named a 2026 recipient of the Morton Schapiro Distinguished Secondary School Teacher Award—a national honor recognizing high school teachers who shape their students’ academic journeys and personal growth.

Presented annually by Northwestern University, the Schapiro Award celebrates educators nominated by graduating seniors for their lasting impact both inside and outside the classroom. Alessandra is one of four teachers selected this year and was formally recognized during the University’s commencement ceremony in June.

Alessandra brings a deeply rooted passion for teaching to her work. Her career—both in the U.S. and abroad—has been defined by a commitment to expanding opportunities for young women in mathematics. After encountering gender-based stereotypes during her own academic journey, she made it her mission to create a learning environment where girls are empowered to excel in math with confidence and curiosity.

At Holton, Alessandra has built a dynamic learning environment that connects mathematics to fields like art, architecture, and history, helping students see the subject as both creative and relevant. Her approach not only strengthens technical skills but also builds confidence—particularly for students who may not initially see themselves as “math people.”

Former student Maya Solomon ’22, graduating from Northwestern with a degree in engineering, credits Alessandra with transforming her relationship with math and inspiring her academic path. Colleagues echo that sentiment, describing Alessandra as an educator who balances rigor with enthusiasm, pushing students to take intellectual risks while supporting them every step of the way.

Through her teaching, mentorship, and advocacy, Alessandra exemplifies the spirit of the Schapiro Award—demonstrating how great educators don’t just teach subjects, but empower students to reimagine what they’re capable of achieving.
