Seventh Graders Crawl The National Mall
- Middle School
Holton-Arms School's seventh graders recently participated in a Mall Crawl on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This event exemplifies Holton's commitment to inspired learning, purposeful connections, and enhanced excellence in education.
The Mall Crawl activity was built using an innovative BINGO card system to guide students through various landmarks and museums. This traditional field trip connects classroom studies to real-world challenges and embraces the world as a larger context for learning.
Students explored renowned institutions such as the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden, the Museum of Natural History, the National Portrait Gallery, and more. At each location, they engaged in specific activities designed to enhance their understanding and foster creativity. At the Lincoln Memorial, for example, students read the inscriptions and recorded videos expressing their personal interpretations, demonstrating how Holton encourages students to connect purposefully with history and current events.
The crawl also incorporated team-building exercises and mindfulness activities, illustrating Holton's commitment to developing each girl's unique gifts and talents. Games like duck-duck-goose and "this or that" promoted camaraderie among classmates, while a quiet mindful moment activity allowed students to pause and appreciate their surroundings, emphasizing the importance of well-being alongside academic pursuits.
By combining history, art, science, and social interaction, the Mall Crawl provides a well-rounded educational experience that encourages students to approach their backyard, the Nation’s Capital, and greater community with curiosity and a sense of responsibility.
