Students from Holton’s Lower and Middle School delivered an impressive performance at the second ISMAW (Independent School Mathematics Association of Washington) Math Meet, hosted by St. Albans School.

Competing against approximately 300 students, Holton’s Grades 6-8 team earned a remarkable 21 out of 24 possible team points, the result of months of preparation and focused practice. Leading the way was Sally R.R. ’31 with a perfect 6/6 score. Strong 5/6 performances from Heloise HR ’32, Lara S. ’31, Amy X. ’30, Grace G. ’30, and Hadley S. ’30 contributed to the team’s overall success.

Beyond the numbers, the meet marked an important milestone for many participants. For several students, it was their first experience in a large-scale competition setting that tested not only mathematical skill, but also composure and confidence.

One sixth grader, who entered the competition unsure of what to expect, left with three correct answers—a personal achievement that reflects the meet’s emphasis on growth as much as results. In the weeks leading up to the event, students dedicated time to Math Olympiad practices, strengthening problem-solving strategies and building resilience.

“For many of our students, this was their first math meet,” said Sarah Coste, Mathematics Department Co-Chair and Lower School mathematics coordinator. “That takes courage. You’re sitting in a room full of talented peers, under time pressure, and you have to trust your own reasoning. I’m incredibly proud of the way they showed up for themselves and for one another.”

Interest in competitive mathematics continues to grow at Holton, with consistent waitlists for meets and strong participation across grade levels. According to Ms. Coste, while team scores are celebrated, equal value is placed on preparation, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace challenge.
