Holton Alumna Rhea Chung ’12 Performs with Andrea Bocelli

Holton Alumna Rhea Chung ’12 Performs with Andrea Bocelli

Violinist Rhea Chung ’12 performed with Andrea Bocelli at Capital One Arena on December 14, joining the orchestra for what she describes as a career-defining moment in her work as a professional musician.

One of the most meaningful moments of the concert was performing Bocelli’s arrangement of Ave Maria. Bocelli shared with the audience that he developed the arrangement during the pandemic, and conductor Steven Mercurio devoted extra rehearsal time to ensure the orchestra fully realized the artist’s vision. “As a musician, there’s nothing more fulfilling than supporting an artist in bringing their vision to life,” Rhea said.

She also cited Nessun Dorma as a standout moment. “If I closed my eyes, I felt I was in a recording with him, but playing live to it,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, Rhea credits her time at Holton with laying the foundation for her career. “I wouldn’t have my career without Jon Hansen, the former orchestra director at Holton,” she said, noting his role in connecting her with mentors and helping her recognize her strengths. She also credited former Holton Director of Fine and Performing Arts Mary Jane Pagenstecher with shaping her stage presence and professionalism.

The experience of performing alongside Bocelli stood apart from even her most memorable past performances. “Hearing his voice is the closest I’ve felt to touching the sky—the perfect balance of purity and emotional power,” she said.

For students considering music as a career, Rhea offers clear advice: “Work harder than everyone else, especially when you’ve reached the top. Hard work will always trump talent. The most important person to believe in you is you.”
