Eighth Graders Experience History at Mount Vernon

Eighth Graders Experience History at Mount Vernon
  • Middle School

Holton’s eighth-grade students deepened their understanding of United States political history during a field trip to Mount Vernon, where they explored the home and legacy of George Washington. The visit allowed students to connect classroom lessons with the physical spaces that shaped early American leadership.

During the visit, students participated in an Enslaved Persons Tour, learning about the lives and labor of the individuals who lived and worked at Mount Vernon. They also took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Slave Memorial, honoring the often-overlooked contributions of enslaved people and reflecting on the site’s layered and complex history.

“Experiences like this allow students to move beyond textbooks and engage with history in a more meaningful, human way,” said Middle School History Teacher Julia Cronin. “By standing in these spaces and hearing these stories, students develop a deeper understanding of how the past continues to shape our present.”

The field trip serves as a foundation for an upcoming research project in which students will investigate historic sites whose prominence or wealth depended on enslaved labor and design memorials to honor those contributions. Together, the experience underscores the school’s commitment to expanding learning beyond the classroom and helping students build critical thinking, historical empathy, and civic awareness
