From Regional Success to State Triumph: Holton-Arms DECA Continues its Ascent

From Regional Success to State Triumph: Holton-Arms DECA Continues its Ascent
  • Upper School

Following a standout performance at Regionals, the Holton-Arms DECA chapter has reached new heights at the State Career & Development Conference, held on February 28th. Competing against more than 2,000 students from across the state, Holton students once again proved their business acumen and leadership skills.

DECA is a global program founded in 1947 that prepares emerging leaders for careers in business, marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship. By analyzing case studies and delivering creative solutions to industry-based problems under strict time limits, students gain hands-on experience that extends far beyond the classroom. As one student noted, DECA is more than just a competition; it is a space where students learn to turn ideas into real impact and understand that business is about purpose and philanthropy, not just profit.

The journey to the state stage has been one of significant personal and professional growth for the participants. Students reported that the rigorous preparation and role playing practice significantly improved their public speaking and communication skills, giving them the confidence to present ideas clearly while maintaining eye contact with professional judges. This growth also required high levels of adaptability; one 10th-grade competitor shared that during speech practices, they learned to push through mistakes and continue their presentations without starting over, a vital skill in any professional setting.

This year's state conference coincided with Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month in February, a time dedicated to spreading awareness about potential career paths. One student interested in finance noted that competing helped her understand the industry's complexities while allowing her to connect with a broader network of peers.

The results of the State Conference highlight the chapter's growing dominance in the field:

  • Charlotte K. ‘26 secured 1st Place in the Apparel & Accessories Marketing Series.
  • Safiya K. ‘26 earned 2nd Place in the Automotive Services Marketing Series.
  • Claudia Z. ‘26 and Olivia V. ‘26 took 3rd Place in the Travel & Tourism Marketing Team Decision Making event.
  • Eleanor S. '27 was elected as the Maryland DECA Vice President of Membership for the 2026-2027 school year.

By placing in the top three of their respective events, these students have qualified for the prestigious DECA International Conference this April in Atlanta, Georgia. As the chapter continues to grow, it remains a powerful example of what students can achieve through initiative, creativity, courage, and collaboration.
