Nine Holton-Arms’ students competed at the University of Maryland’s Twenty-eighth annual Chemathon Saturday, April 28, 2012 and earned an overall team ranking of second place. The girls competed as a level one team for students who have not yet taken AP Chemistry or IB Chemistry, and who have no past Chemathon experience. Twenty one area schools participated in the Level 1 competition.

The Holton team members are Jennifer Guo ’14, Nyrah Humayun ’14, Madeleine Hyde ’14, Tess Iannarone ’14, Kayla Moffett ’14, Beverly Sihsobhon ’14, Maya Sorini ’14, Noori Srivastava ’14, and Zainab Wurie ’14 were led by Coach and Chemistry teacher Mr. Xu Duan.
The competition is comprised of ten events including five experimental and five theoretical. Eight of these are competed on site (posters and crystals are prepared at school and brought to the competition. Each on-site event lasts 30 minutes.
Team Coach Duan said “We accomplished our mission as planned, and I am immensely proud of all of [the girls]. They have proved soundly that even the best amongst the best cannot match them.”
The Chemathon competition is organized by a committee of high school chemistry teachers and chemists, and is hosted by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland at College Park. (http://www2.chem.umd.edu/chemathon/)
