Varsity Field Hockey

The 2012 Varsity field hockey team celebrated a historic season this year.  With a regular season record of 7-4-1, we showed our best league performance in 3 years!  In September, our season began with games against Bullis, St. Stevens and St. Agnes, Stone Ridge, and Walter Johnson.  Despite 3 straight losses, we quickly were quickly able to regroup, rebounding against Georgetown Visitation, and holding them at a 1-1 Tie game, following a grueling overtime. After this disappointment, we never let up, and won 6 straight ISL games against NCS, Potomac, Sidwell, Holy Child, Madeira, and Episcopal.  All of these games were wins by only 1 goal, with the large majority of them decided in only the last 5 minutes of play.  In the ISL tournament, we beat NCS in overtime thanks to two goals by sophomore, Marisa Postal and a winning goal scored in overtime by Junior Maddie Merkle.  In the semifinals, we played undefeated Bullis, the top seed in the league.  For those who saw us play in the semifinal, it was a heated contest, as we got getting dangerously closer to tying them as the clock ran out.  Still, from this game, it was clear just how much our team had improved over the course of the season. Our teamwork improved tremendously, and is showcased by a season in which 9 of our 17 players walked away with goals.  In a year when the league was fraught with numerous tie games, we quickly learned from our mistakes and developed an ability to finish games with finesse and patience.   Our Goalkeeper, junior Blair Greenwald, had a great season with 134 saves, a 17% save percentage, and 3 shutouts, ultimately earning herself a spot on the All-ISL team.  Additionally, our leading scorer Marisa earned an honorable mention with nine goals and three assists. Again, the season was unforgettable, and wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the dedication of every player on the team.  Our seniors this year:  Kate McDonough, Antoinette Nwabunnia and Fiona Moran,  all showed  tremendous leadership and drive this season as we pushed our limits as a team and worked hard to win tight games.  As captains, Kate McDonough, Fiona Moran, and Katie Bergamesca were excellent organizers and truly believed in our abilities as a team.  As a first year coach, working with the athletes at Holton was an incredible experience.  I can’t wait until next fall and all the excitement that it will bring.  I’m already counting down the days.
