The Alice S. Marriott Library

The Alice S. Marriott Library is the destination for inquiry and engagement with the Holton community. Librarians empower learners by facilitating interactions with a variety of ideas and viewpoints and guide students to becoming independent, lifelong learners. By collaborating with faculty, they extend programs outside of the library’s walls and into our school, local and global communities.

The Alice S. Marriott Library provides access to information for all students in middle and upper school. It contains a wide range of materials to satisfy the needs and interests of students and faculty. The collection consists of approximately 20,000 print volumes, a growing ebook collection, a large number of periodicals, audiovisual materials, and equipment. The space is open throughout the day for individual study, classes, group work, creating in the MakerSpace, and reading.

Library Program

The objectives of the library program include:

Instructing the students in the use of the library and its resources: print, non-print, and electronic
Developing the students’ research skills in accessing information
Developing the students’ information literacy (i.e. not only accessing information but also learning how to evaluate the type, quantity, and quality of information needed and how to make best use of it)
Stimulating the students’ interest in reading fiction and nonfiction as sources of pleasure and enrichment

The library program is integrated into the curriculum at all grade levels and in all subject areas. The librarians work with students individually and in scheduled classes to help them acquire research skills, develop information literacy, and master the variety of changing information sources including books, ebooks, online databases, web materials, and multimedia sources. Specialized reference sources, services, and search strategies for each discipline are introduced as needed.

Professional Collection for Faculty

The Marriott Library houses a professional collection to promote faculty development and continued learning. Professional journals and magazines share latest educational research with our teachers and help them to stay on the cutting edge of their disciplines. In addition, the collection has books to inspire, inform and challenge.
