Science Research Program

Summer Internships

Holton’s Science Research Program gives a group of Upper School students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a professional research laboratory setting—an experience that builds familiarity, skills, and confidence, while also helping students expand their network and explore college and career options.

Students selected for this program are matched with one of our partner institutions, where they participate in an immersive, eight-week summer internship before their senior year. Partner organizations include the George Washington University School of Engineering, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS), the University of Maryland, and Georgetown University.

Prior to their internships, students take specialized STEM courses at Holton designed to prepare them for the experience: Computer Programming and Robotics for engineering-focused internships, and Microbiology and Molecular Biology for biomedical-related posts.

Up to 12 students are chosen each year for the program in the spring of their sophomore year. In 2019, 12 students worked on topics ranging from drug-resistant bacteria to drone communications.

STEM Scholar Designation

Following the completion of the Science Research Program internship during the summer between junior and senior year, students who:

  • demonstrate interest,
  • complete required applied science and math opportunities,
  • and achieve a high level in related academic course work at Holton

may receive the designation of STEM Scholar.

This designation is recognized at Commencement and noted on final transcripts. This designation is limited to students who participate in the Science Research Program, demonstrate the strongest performance in math and science related course work, as well as their extra-curricular endeavors
